How the idea came...!
Seniors can give you a lot of information about what needs to be done to improve the college. The information comes out more fluently from the mouths of passed out seniors, mainly due to the fact that they have no stakes in the college. During such an interactive session with a few seniors, I was made the target of a flurry of questions-“Why does a top class institute like SJCE lack a full fledged student friendly website?” My reply that the college does have one went unnoticed among the shouts of general agreement. I was told that the existing website of the college did satisfy their hunger, but it clearly did not taste good.
That set me thinking as to why we don’t have a website which provides email ids to students and faculty, which will instill a sense of pride in the students (imagine sriram@sjce.ac.in) and also help in facilitating off classroom interactions with the lecturers.
Discussions with a few likeminded friends took off well and I began to have a clear idea of how I wanted my college website to be. The next task on mind was to give a concrete shape to the idea. A few weeks into the job, I began to feel, why shouldn’t I create a site myself? And that became the spark that lit a forest fire.
I initially wanted to make it just for myself, and I spent sleepless nights downloading PHP tutorials from the net and trying them out myself. When self-help did not seem to work, I decided to go in for courses to supplement my already acquired knowledge. I learnt ASP and CGI (in the process), and began to sculpt away the great site, one chip at a time.
First I put on the oft-repeated things like courses offered, student life, infrastructural assets and things of the sorts. As a tribute to the seniors who put the germ of this idea in my mind, I added the alumni section. Then I drew up the prototype for the email id provisions.
Then came the administrative process. I talked to the editorial board, and asked them permission for students to submit their articles online, which quite a few of you have done, and hopefully, if everything works out, the online edition of this magazine will be up on the site, too.
